Alexandra Ripley (née Braid; January 8, 1934 – January 10, 2004) was an American novelist primarily known for her historical fiction, particularly her ambitious sequel, Scarlett, to Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. Ripley was a meticulous researcher and writer, dedicating herself to historical accuracy in her novels, often immersing herself in the settings and customs of the time periods she depicted. Her style was characterized by a strong narrative voice and detailed descriptions, aiming to transport readers to the worlds she created. Before achieving fame with Scarlett, Ripley had a lengthy career, publishing her first novel, Who’s That Lady in the President’s Bed?, in 1972, and several other titles, including the critically acclaimed Charleston.
