E.E. "Doc" Smith (1890 – 1966) was an American writer best known for his prolific and imaginative space opera series. Smith initially gained recognition for his short stories published in Astounding Stories and Black Cat Weekly, before launching his immensely popular series which heavily influenced the development of the science fiction genre.
