George MacDonald Fraser (1925-2008) was a highly respected British author and screenwriter renowned for his meticulous historical fiction and sharp, often satirical, storytelling. He achieved particular fame through his Flashman series, a sprawling saga following the exploits of an ambitious young Englishman during the Napoleonic Wars and the British Empire's expansion. Fraser’s writing style was characterized by its detailed research, witty prose, and cynical portrayal of historical figures and events, often skewering the pretensions of the upper classes. Beyond the Flashman series, Fraser also wrote extensively in other genres, including historical crime novels featuring the detective Private McAuslan and standalone historical narratives.
