Gladys Mitchell (1901-1983) was an English writer primarily known for her extensive series of detective novels centered around the sharp-witted and often critical Mrs. Bradley. Born Gladys Maude, she received a teaching background, having worked at St. Paul's School and St. Anne's Senior Girls School, before dedicating herself to writing. Mitchell’s style is characterized by intricate plots, clever dialogue, and a distinctly British atmosphere, frequently incorporating historical elements and eccentric characters. Her novels, totaling over 60, are renowned for their complexity and often explored themes of death, secrets, and the peculiarities of small-town life. She also wrote historical fiction under the pseudonym Stephen Hockaby, demonstrating her versatility.
