Greg Iles (born April 8, 1960, died August 15, 2025) was an American novelist primarily known for his intricate crime thrillers and Southern Gothic stories. He spent his formative years in Mississippi, and later in Germany due to his father’s role as a doctor with the US Embassy Clinic. Iles began his career in music, playing in a rock band called Frank Scarlett before pursuing his passion for writing. His style is characterized by complex plots, morally ambiguous characters, and a deep exploration of the dark undercurrents within Southern communities. He penned eighteen novels and one novella, showcasing a consistent ability to build suspense and engage the reader in gritty, atmospheric narratives.
