Ishmael Beah (born November 23, 1980) is a Sierra Leonean author and human rights activist whose work explores themes of trauma, resilience, and the devastating effects of war. Beah’s writing style is characterized by its unflinching honesty and vivid sensory details, drawing heavily on his own experiences as a child soldier during Sierra Leone’s civil war. He gained widespread recognition with his memoir, A Long Way Gone, a harrowing account of his time in the Sierra Leonean army, and subsequently published Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.
