John D. MacDonald (1916–1993) was an incredibly prolific American author, selling an estimated 70 million books throughout his career. His writing is characterized by a blend of hard-boiled detective fiction, suspense, and Southern settings, often featuring a charismatic and unconventional protagonist, Travis McGee. MacDonald's style is known for its sharp dialogue, vivid descriptions, and a cynical, often humorous, outlook on human nature. He gained widespread recognition with his long-running Travis McGee series, but also produced numerous standalone novels and short stories.
