John Maddox Roberts (June 25, 1947 – May 23, 2024) was an American author known for his prolific output across multiple genres, including science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. Roberts began his writing career after a military stint and a brief expulsion from college. He built a significant following through his extensive series, most notably the SPQR series, which vividly portrays Roman history through a mystery lens. Roberts’s writing style was characterized by detailed world-building, complex plots, and a strong emphasis on action and intrigue.
