Karl Marlantes (born December 24, 1944) is an American novelist and Vietnam War veteran whose work is deeply informed by his experiences. A former Marine, Marlantes’ writing is characterized by intense realism, meticulous detail, and a focus on the psychological and moral complexities of war, particularly as experienced by soldiers. He utilizes a highly immersive, almost journalistic style, aiming to authentically portray the chaotic and often brutal realities of conflict. His most recent work, Cold Victory, concludes the trilogy begun with Matterhorn and What It Is Like to Go to War.
