Shelby Foote (November 17, 1916 – June 27, 2005) was an American writer and journalist primarily known for his expansive and deeply researched historical works. Though he considered himself a novelist, Foote gained widespread recognition for his monumental three-volume history, The Civil War, which meticulously recounts the events of the American Civil War.
