Akwaeke Emezi, born in 1987 in Umuahia, Nigeria, to a Nigerian Igbo father and Sri Lankan Tamil immigrant mother, is a novelist and poet known for their experimental and genre-bending style. Emezi’s work often explores themes of identity, trauma, and spirituality, frequently utilizing multiple voices and perspectives. Their writing is characterized by lyrical prose, surreal imagery, and a commitment to representing marginalized experiences, frequently drawing on Igbo mythology and folklore. They began developing their storytelling skills from a young age, utilizing them as a means of escape and connection during turbulent times.
