Reeman served in the Royal Navy during World War II and the Korean War, experiences which heavily influenced his writing. He adopted the pseudonym Alexander Kent to expand his writing output, and his works are characterized by meticulous detail and a strong focus on naval tactics and life aboard ships, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. Reeman became a published author in 1958 and went on to create several long-running series, most notably the Richard Bolitho series and the Blackwood Family series.
