Born in Andrews County, Texas, he initially worked as a farm and ranch editor for the San Angelo Standard-Times, gaining firsthand knowledge of the region’s history and people. Kelton's writing style was characterized by a gritty realism and a strong sense of place, often exploring themes of family, loyalty, and the challenges of frontier life. He drew heavily on his own experiences and observations, crafting stories filled with vivid characters and compelling narratives.
