Lauren Beukes (born June 5, 1976) is a South African novelist, short story writer, journalist, and television scriptwriter. Known for her distinctive writing style that blends realism with speculative elements, particularly science fiction and dystopian themes, Beukes frequently explores social commentary and ethical dilemmas. Her work often features strong female protagonists grappling with complex moral questions within challenging environments, as seen in her early short story collection, Slipping. Beukes has garnered acclaim for her ambitious and thought-provoking novels. Notably, Moxyland and Zoo City are both critically lauded for their innovative concepts and immersive storytelling.
