Originally a diplomat for the United States, he developed a deep fascination with Chinese history and culture, particularly the legendary Judge Dee, a 7th-century Chinese magistrate and detective. Gulik's writing style is characterized by meticulous detail, complex plots, and an immersive portrayal of 8th and 9th century China, often drawing on historical sources and incorporating elements of Chinese philosophy and law.
