Virginia Lanier (October 28, 1930 – October 27, 2003) was an American mystery fiction writer best known for her prolific output within the "Bloodhound" mystery series. Born in Madison County, Lanier's life experiences, including being an orphan and foster child, heavily influenced her writing style, characterized by detailed settings and a focus on small-town crime investigations. Her novels typically feature Jo Beth Sidden, a bloodhound trainer who solves mysteries, and are known for their atmospheric descriptions and intricate plots.
Lanier published extensively throughout her career, primarily focusing on the Bloodhound series which began with "Death in Bloodhound Red" in 1995. She consistently delivered commercially successful mysteries, demonstrating a dedication to crafting compelling narratives within the mystery genre.
