Yuri Sergeyevich Rytkheu (1930-2008), born in Uelen, Chukotka, was a unique figure in Russian literature, writing primarily in both Chukchi and Russian. His life was deeply intertwined with the Arctic environment, having been a hunter, geologist, and sailor. Rytkheu's writing style is characterized by a blend of adventure, folklore, and social commentary, often exploring themes of traditional Chukchi culture and the impact of modernization on the Arctic.
